So You Want To Get A Photography Session With Your Dog?
If you’re here, then you’re probably thinking about booking a professional photo session for your furry friend. We all love capturing everyday moments with smartphones (your phone’s camera roll is probably filled with photos of them—I know mine is!), but professional photos are more than just nice snapshots.
For many, it’s about preserving the way their dog looks at them with pure love and
So you’re here now to learn how to make sure you get the best photos possible!
You don’t need a perfectly trained or well-behaved pet. The sessions are meant to be fun, natural, and stress-free — a chance to capture their true personalities. Here are a few things you can do to help everything go smoothly:
Grooming:
• Schedule haircuts in advance: Please avoid booking a cut just a day or two beforehand. Ideally, a trim should be done at least two weeks prior in case you’re not completely happy with it.
• Trim nails: Short nails are more comfortable for your pet and look better in close-up shots.
• Brush thoroughly: Give your pet a good brush beforehand to remove loose hair and mats.
• Clean their face: Remove any debris, “eye boogers,” or tear stains that you can. (Whatever’s left can often be removed during the editing process.)
Burn Off Some Energy:
A short walk or a bit of play a few hours beforehand can help your dog release excess energy and be more comfortable during their session. Just be careful not to over-tire them — we want them to be awake and engaged, not ready for a nap!
Bring Treats and Toys:
During booking, I’ll send a brief questionnaire to learn more about your pet — their preferences, any food sensitivities, and what motivates them.
I always bring a variety of treats and toys to sessions, but it’s a great idea to bring their favorite treats or a well-loved ball or toy. Your pet may respond better to something already familiar.
Be Prepared for Sessions to Take Time:
Some dogs need time to adjust to a new environment — the backdrops, lighting, camera, and strange smells can be a bit intimidating.
I prioritize your pet’s happiness and will move at their pace. So please be prepared to give them time to warm up, explore their surroundings, and find their confidence. Your encouragement and patience can make all the difference.
Relax and Enjoy It!
Take a deep breath and enjoy the experience! Your pet can sense your mood — if you’re stressed, they may become nervous; if you’re calm and having fun, they’re more likely to follow your lead.
It’s important to trust me to work with your pet’s unique energy and quirks. Some of the best photos come from those spontaneous, unposed moments when your furry friend is simply being their charming, mischievous self. So relax, enjoy, and let their true personalities shine through!
